EMSD Shines Again at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

Back Button Back to Successful Cases

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) achieved outstanding results at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (Inventions Geneva), clinching eleven awards, including five gold, five silver and one bronze medals. The winning projects span diverse domains, including robotics, marine energy, and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, showcasing the EMSD’s scientific capabilities. Some of these projects are successful cases matched through the E&M InnoPortal, and some are collaborative efforts with client departments. We will continue to support our client departments in applying innovation and technology (I&T) to enhance services and productivity.

Gold Medal Projects

AI-enabled Smart Water Tank Cleaning Robot

The robot is equipped with functions such as AI-powered dirt detection, autonomous navigation, scrubbing, suction, high-pressure rinsing and disinfection. It thus eliminates the need for workers to enter confined water tanks for cleaning tasks, thereby improving occupational safety and health, reducing cleaning costs and increasing operational efficiency.

Automatic Control Methods and Devices for Air-Side Equipment Using AI Technology

The AI solution leverages data from Internet of Things sensors and weather forecasts to optimise the operation of air-handling units in healthcare premises, enhancing indoor thermal comfort while achieving at least a 10% saving in electricity consumption.

Marine Energy Innovation in Power Generation

Jointly developed by the EMSD and the Marine Department, the project transforms marine energy into electricity to provide a sustainable power supply for offshore marine facilities.

Quadruped Confined Space Inspectors

To enhance work safety in confined spaces, the EMSD has developed a quadruped robotic dog. Equipped with a self-healing mesh network to ensure stable signal transmission, as well as instruments like gas detectors, thermal imaging cameras and optical cameras, the robotic dog can conduct inspections and risk assessments in complex terrains and environments.

Revolutionising Fault Detection in Air Handling Units and Chiller Systems in Healthcare Institutions

The AI system analyses data from building management system, operating parameters and maintenance records to monitor the component condition of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems in hospitals for early identification and alert of potential anomalies, facilitating timely follow-up and rectification, thereby minimising system failure and downtime and enhancing system reliability.

“Hong Kong Version of Inventions Geneva"

In addition to its remarkable success achieved at the Inventions Geneva, the EMSD also won one Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury, one Gold Medal and five Silver Medals at the 5th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong at the end of last year. At this competition, which is renowned as the “Hong Kong version of Inventions Geneva”, the AI Visual Intelligence-enabled Glasses for Drone Operations jointly developed by the EMSD and the Hong Kong Police Force, received the Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury. The system allows drone operators to receive via augmented reality glasses live footage and AI analysis results transmitted from drones, providing effective support for crowd management in large-scale events. The gold-medal-winning AI-powered Quadruped Robotic Fogger for Pest Control integrates AI with an autonomous navigation system to perform robotic fogging tasks automatically, saving manpower and enhancing efficiency.
